Mass Timber
A sustainable construction material with many benefits
AKA employs mass timber in many of our projects. This innovative building technology brings many benefits to our work, including carbon sequestration, structural simplicity, prefabrication, and natural beauty. Mass timber is a category of construction systems that uses premanufactured wood products for wall, floor, roof, column, and beam assemblies. Typical components include Cross Laminated Timber Panels (CLT), Nail Laminated Timber Panels (NLT), Glulam beams, and columns, which are made of dimensional (2-by) lumber as opposed to the large, solid wood members associated with heavy timber.
Mass timber has many benefits to the development industry, including aesthetics, design flexibility, environmental performance, strength and rigidity, lighter weight (compared to concrete construction), and energy efficiency. In prefabricated buildings, mass timber is particularly beneficial; it has the structural simplicity needed for cost-effective projects and design versatility and it can be rapidly installed with reduced waste.
