Engaging public spaces
The proposed project introduces lively commercial frontage in a prime location facing onto Cleveland Avenue with 5 stories of residential units above.
Commercial retail units are set back from the property line in order to create a generous public interface. A covered pedestrian walkway provides shelter from the elements as well as ample opportunities for patio space and and indoor/outdoor retail areas.
Residential units include a combination of one bedroom, two bedroom and two bedroom plus den suites. Each unit includes its own balcony while most units also include an internal storage room or “flex” space. The building exteriors are articulated as separate volumes in order to divide the length of the building into smaller masses and relate to the scale of a typical city block in downtown Squamish.
The project proposes common outdoor amenity space for residential use at level 3 facing towards the laneway. This outdoor area will provide a semi-private park like setting for the enjoyment of future residents. It will also create a softer green edge to the building façade along the lane. The laneway façade screens the ground level and 2nd floor parking areas with a composition of spandrel glass and light metal screens. Potential areas for public art installations are identified.
